How to Install a Fireplace – Everything You Need to Know

Step 1: Decide on the Type of Fireplace

Before you start, choose the type of fireplace you want. Fireplaces come in a variety of styles, each with its own installation requirements. The most popular options are:

Wood-burning fireplaces

Wood burning fires give you the classic crackle and warmth of real wood but require a chimney or flue for ventilation. They also need regular cleaning and maintenance.

Gas fireplaces

Gas fires are convenient and clean. They require a gas line to be installed and, depending on the model, may or may not need ventilation.

Electric fireplaces

Electric fireplaces are the simplest to install, as they don't require ventilation or a gas line. You just plug them in, but they don't provide the same real flame experience.

Choosing the right type depends on your home, your budget, and how much maintenance you're willing to do. Before proceeding, I recommend thinking about what fits your lifestyle.

Step 2: Check Building Regulations

Once you've decided on the type of fireplace, it's important to check local building regulations. In the UK, fireplaces must comply with safety standards. This includes everything from where the fireplace can be placed to how the chimney or flue is installed. You might need a professional to help you check if your home is suitable for a fireplace.

It's also worth noting that gas and wood-burning fireplaces often require permits, especially if you live in a listed building or a conservation area. Don't skip this step—you don't want to run into trouble after you’ve completed the project.

Step 3: Prepare the Space

Before installation begins, the area where the fireplace will go must be prepared. This usually involves more than just finding a spot in your living room. First, think about the position of the fireplace.

For wood-burning and gas fireplaces, you’ll need a chimney or flue. If you’re going electric, positioning is easier, as you won’t need worry about ventilation. However, you will still need to consider where power sockets are located.

Once you’ve decided on the location, clear the area of any furniture or belongings. Installing a fireplace can create a lot of dust and debris, so make sure the room is ready for that. If you’re replacing an existing fireplace, this is the time to remove the old one.

Step 4: Install Ventilation (If Needed)

If you’re installing a wood-burning or gas fireplace, the next step is ventilation. This is one of the most important parts of the process. Without proper ventilation, dangerous gases like carbon monoxide can build up, putting your home and health at risk.

Wood-burning fireplaces need a chimney, while gas fireplaces might need either a chimney or a flue, depending on the model. You’ll need to hire a professional to install or inspect the ventilation system. This isn’t something you should try to do on your own unless you have experience. The ventilation needs to meet safety standards, and a professional will ensure it’s done correctly.

Electric fireplaces don’t require ventilation, which makes this step much easier if you choose that option.

Step 5: Assemble the Fireplace

Now that the area is prepped and ventilation is sorted, it’s time to assemble the fireplace. The installation process will vary depending on the type of fireplace you’ve chosen. With wood-burning fireplaces, this usually involves building or installing the firebox, connecting it to the chimney, and making sure everything is sealed to prevent smoke from leaking into the room.

For gas fireplaces, you’ll need to connect the fire to the gas line. This is another part of the process that needs to be done by a qualified gas engineer. Once the gas line is connected, the fire can be installed and fixed.

For electric fireplaces, installation is simpler. Most units just need to be positioned in place and plugged into the nearest power outlet. If the unit is built into the wall, you might need some basic carpentry to fit it securely.

Whichever type you’ve chosen, follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely, and don’t be afraid to bring in professional help if needed. It’s vital that everything is installed correctly for safety reasons.

Step 6: Finish the Surround and Hearth

Once the fireplace is installed, it’s time to add finishing touches to the surround and hearth. The surround is the decorative frame around the fireplace, while the hearth is the base it sits on. These elements aren’t just for looks – they also play a role in safety, especially with wood-burning fireplaces.

There are endless options for surrounds, from traditional brick or stone to more modern marble or tiled finishes. The hearth should be made from a non-combustible material like slate, stone, or concrete, and it needs to be wide enough to catch any stray embers or sparks.

You can buy pre-made surrounds and hearths or have them custom-built to fit your space. Either way, this is your chance to make the fireplace a focal point of the room. It’s not just about warmth – it’s about looks too.

Step 7: Test the Fireplace

Now that the fireplace is installed and the finishing touches are in place, it’s time for the last step – testing the fireplace. This is crucial to make sure everything is working properly and safely.

For wood-burning fireplaces, light a small fire to check that the chimney is drawing the smoke properly. You’ll want to be sure there are no leaks around the firebox.

For gas fireplaces, test the ignition and make sure the flames are burning cleanly. If anything looks off, call your gas engineer to come and check it.

For electric fireplaces, simply turn it on and make sure it’s heating properly and that all the settings are working as they should.

If everything is working as it should, you’re ready to enjoy the warmth and comfort of your new fireplace.

All Done!

Installing a fireplace might seem complicated, but if you break it down into steps, it’s a manageable process. The most important thing is to plan carefully, follow safety guidelines, and, when in doubt, call in a professional. Whether you go for the crackling charm of a wood fire, the convenience of gas, or the simplicity of electricity, a fireplace will not only warm your home but also create a welcoming, cosy atmosphere.

And once it’s installed, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one.

I am Kai, a Fireplace Showroom Manager

I am Kai Marcos, and I have worked as the showroom manager since 2019. The company has a large showroom in Cleckheaton, Leeds, and I talk to hundreds of customers every week who come to our store to look for a fireplace. When it comes to fireplaces, the most popular options are electric, gas, and multi-fuel models.

The most frequently asked questions are related to installation, and the requirements for installing each type are quite different. When buying a fireplace for my living room, I opted for electric, as all I had to do was take it out of the box and plug it in, but if you want real flames, gas or multi flame fire are better choices.

My colleagues and I are always on hand in store or online to offer advice, so if you can’t decide what is the best type of fireplace for your home, please contact us by phone, or if you are in the area, pass by our Leeds showroom.
